Attidekou Tossodo after cataract surgery in rural Togo

Cataract Blindness in Rural Togo

Attidekou Tossodo is a farmer and palm wine producer in Tohoun, in the Moyen Mono region of Togo.

About 20 years ago, he was hit in one eye by a branch. Over time, he began to lose sight in his other eye as well. Even as his vision worsened, he continued working in the fields to provide for his family.

Living and Working Without Clear Sight

As his sight faded, his work became more difficult and dangerous. He could no longer clearly recognize faces from a distance and often bumped into branches and obstacles while working.

Even so, he kept going.

His family worried about him daily, knowing how easily he could be injured and how much they depended on his work.

Mobile Eye Surgery in Tohoun

During Sight.org’s second campaign of 2026, a surgical team came to Tohoun.

When Attidekou heard, he left his work immediately and came for an examination.

The team found cataracts in both eyes and scheduled him for surgery.

Each procedure took only a short time.

He Can See Again

The next day, when the bandages were removed, Attidekou could see clearly again.

He can now move through the fields without bumping into branches. He recognizes people from a distance. He works with more confidence and less fear.

Because of you, he can provide for his family again.
