Earlier this year, Amahaya was selling flatbreads at the market when her vision became much worse.
She had lived with eye trouble for years after being hit in the eye by a stone as a child. But this time, everything became blurry. She could no longer recognize people’s faces and needed help getting home from the market.
For more than four months, Amahaya lived without sight.
Depending on Her Mother
During that time, Amahaya depended completely on her mother.
Her mother helped her eat, get dressed, move around, and go out when she needed to. Amahaya could no longer work or do simple things on her own.
Then she learned that an eye screening would be held through a local church. With her mother’s help, she registered and was told surgery could restore her sight.
Then, three days before the trip, her mother passed away.
The person who had cared for her every day was suddenly gone.
She Kept Going
With encouragement from church leaders, Amahaya still made the journey for surgery.
The Sight.org team welcomed her and explained the procedure clearly. After surgery, she returned the next day to have her bandage removed.
When she opened her eyes, she could see again.
She could see light, colors, faces, and the people around her.
She began to cry when she realized she could see again. She said she wished her mother could have been there to see that moment.
Today, Amahaya can move forward with her sight restored.
