Blindness Took Away More Than His Sight
For more than two years, Kabafei Tchilabalo lived with cataract blindness in rural Togo.
At first, eye drops seemed to help. Then one morning he woke up and could not see at all.
Kabafei had a wife and two children to support. To keep food on the table and pay school fees, he sold his car. Later, he sold his mill. Within a year, everything was gone.
Most days he stayed at home.
His children guided him when he needed to move around. If he was alone, he sometimes crawled from his room to the terrace because he could not find his way safely.
Relatives stopped visiting. People in the village kept their distance. Once a provider for his family, Kabafei felt he had little to offer anyone.
Cataract Surgery in Pagouda-Binah
During Sight.org’s outreach in Pagouda-Binah, Kabafei’s wife heard about the program at the market and brought him for an examination.
Our team diagnosed cataracts and scheduled him for surgery.
Kabafei was surprised that the care was provided at no cost. He expected there would be fees somewhere along the way.
There weren’t.
Seeing Again
The following day, the bandage was removed.
For the first time in more than two years, Kabafei could see clearly.
Now he moves around without assistance. His children no longer need to guide him everywhere he goes. His wife no longer carries the responsibility of providing for the family alone.
When we spoke with him afterward, he said, “Who would have thought I’d still be able to see?”
