Six Months of Dependence
Moustapha had always found ways to stay busy.
Though retired, he spent his days selling water and raising goats and sheep in his village in northern Togo. Life was simple, but it was his own.
Then his vision began to change.
At first, some days were better than others. He traveled to a hospital in the city and received treatment that seemed to help for a while. But the improvement didn’t last. Gradually, his sight disappeared.
Soon, he could no longer recognize faces—not his friends, neighbors, or even family members.
For six months, he rarely left home.
His son helped him dress, bathe, and move from place to place. The work he once enjoyed came to a stop, and relatives occasionally sent money to help the family get by.
An Answer on the Radio
One day, Moustapha heard a radio announcement that Sight.org would be providing cataract surgery in his area.
After months of darkness, it gave him hope.
His son brought him to the outreach, where the medical team examined his eyes and confirmed that surgery could help.
The operation was completed that day.
The next morning, his bandage was removed.
Moustapha could see.
Familiar Faces Once More
Today, he is back at the water pump. He cares for his goats and sheep again and moves around without needing someone to guide him.
Most of all, he can recognize the people around him.
After six months without seeing clearly, he can once again see his son’s face.
