In many parts of rural West Africa, blindness from cataracts is not simply a medical condition. It can become a life-altering barrier that affects nearly every part of a person’s life.
A blind farmer may no longer be able to work. A grandmother may lose the ability to care for herself. Children are often pulled from school to guide blind relatives from place to place. In villages where survival depends on daily labor, blindness can push entire families deeper into poverty and isolation.
The tragedy is that cataract blindness is curable.
That reality is one of the reasons Sight.org exists.
Founded in 2012, Sight.org operates mobile eye surgery outreaches throughout rural West Africa, primarily in Togo. Instead of requiring patients to travel long distances to urban hospitals—something many cannot afford or physically manage—Sight.org brings surgery directly to villages near patients’ homes.
This approach removes some of the greatest barriers rural families face:
- Transportation costs
- Housing expenses
- Loss of income during travel
- Limited access to medical infrastructure
By bringing surgery into remote regions, patients can recover near family members while receiving care that would otherwise remain inaccessible.
Sight.org primarily performs Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS), a highly effective technique widely regarded as the gold standard for high-volume surgery in low-resource settings. The procedure is durable, cost-effective, and well suited for rural outreach environments.
Since its founding, Sight.org has performed more than 11,000 sight-restoring surgeries and now facilitates nearly 2,000 surgeries each year.
But the organization’s mission extends beyond medical care alone.
Sight.org also exists to openly and respectfully share the gospel of Jesus Christ among communities that are often unreached or underserved. Every village outreach includes gospel proclamation, prayer, and engagement with village leaders and chiefs.
The ministry believes physical healing and spiritual ministry should not compete with one another. Instead, they reflect the example of Christ’s ministry—serving people with dignity while freely sharing the gospel.
Importantly, Sight.org does not force conversions or condition treatment on spiritual response. Patients are cared for regardless of belief, background, or response.
Another major part of the ministry’s long-term vision is doctor training. Rather than relying primarily on outside teams, Sight.org invests heavily in African ophthalmologists and local leadership. To date, 37 doctors from across Africa have been trained through the program.
This emphasis on local leadership helps create sustainable impact far beyond the organization’s own direct capacity.
Sight.org also works intentionally to remain financially efficient. The ministry uses low-cost, high-quality equipment, partners with village clinics, and maintains a mobile model that reduces overhead while expanding access to care.
Rather than pursuing growth for its own sake, our prayer has been to remain faithful to the work God continues to place before us.
Sight.org exists because millions still live without access to basic eye surgery. It exists because many rural communities still have little exposure to the gospel. And it exists because restoring sight can open doors that were once closed—both physically and spiritually.
